Do-Ho Suh

Do-Ho Suh – is a Korean sculptor and installation artist.  He was born in Seoul Korea in 1962.  He moves from Korea to New York on an ongoing basis and one of his themes is migration, spatial and psychological.  He work draws attention to ways viewers occupy and inhabit public spaces.  His work explores the relation between individuality, collectivity and anonymity.

I find his work really interesting, especially the use of small characters.  Both the pieces of cause and effect and screen are my most favourite. Screen from a distance creates a colourful wall and it is not until closer inspection that the make up of these colours become apparant .i.e. the colours are infact a mass of small characters who by their stance, have created a wall.  This piece was entirely made up of Stainless Steel with variable dimensions.
Cause and effect again gives a false illusion from a distance. The viewer initially sees what resembles a water feature and on closer inspection also is created from a structure of small people.  This piece was created from acrylic, stainless steel and an aluminimum frame..

Do Ho Suh is interested in the malability of space in both its physical and metophorical manifestations.  He constructs site specic installations that question the boundaries of identity. As a contemporary artist his work expands visual creativity however due to budget and time limitations I will not be able to use this method.  However it has made me question the use of colour and colour illusion in my piece.  This is something I will further research.
